What If I Choose Adoption?

We understand that the decision to place your child for adoption can be a difficult one.  We know that you love your child and want what’s best for him or her.  We will help support you through an adoption.  We will also support you if you change your mind about adoption and decide to parent your baby.  No matter what, we will be there for you and will never pressure you.

Most birth mothers have many questions about placing their child for adoption through Adoption Links Worldwide.  Here are the answers to some of those questions.

1. Is there any cost to me?
No.  We offer you support through the decision making process without any cost to you.
2. Can I be involved in choosing the family for my baby?
Yes!  We encourage you to choose the adoptive family.  We will show you families that we have approved and know are safe.  You can meet them and make sure you feel comfortable with them before the baby is born.  Some birth parents want the adoptive family to be very involved through the pregnancy, and some birth parents no not.  It is up to you how involved you want your relationship to be.

3. How do I know that the adoptive family I choose is safe?
Every adoptive family goes through an adoptive home study process.  The home study process includes assessment of their character, marital stability, financial situation, lifestyle, and medical history.  We run background checks to verify there is no record of criminal activity or child abuse.  Their home will also be inspected by a social worker to ensure it is a safe environment for a child.

After a child is placed in the adoptive family’s home, a social worker will go out and meet with the family to ensure that they continue to be safe.  We go to great lengths to make sure the families we offer you are going to be excellent parents to a child.

4. What is open or semi-open adoption?
In open adoption, birth parents continue to have a relationship that includes face to face contact with the adoptive family and their child, throughout the child’s lifetime.  Birth parents play a significant role in their child’s life, not as a parent, but as an important member of the child’s extended family.

Semi-open adoption may include the exchange of letters and pictures between the adoptive parents and birth parents.

As birth parents, you will decide on the amount of contact you wish to have with the adoptive family.  Some birth parents request letters and pictures.  Other birth parents may want visits or telephone calls.  Ultimately, the choice is up to you.

5. What if I deliver the baby and haven’t created a plan?  Can you work with me from the hospital?
Yes.  We are here to support you anytime.  We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  To reach us in an emergency call us at 402-661-7101 and follow the directions to leave an urgent message for us.  We will call you back quickly.
6.
If I choose adoption, when is my decision final?
In Nebraska, the decision is not made until relinquishment papers are signed.  These papers cannot be signed until the baby is at least two days old.  It is your choice when to sign these legal papers.  We encourage you to take as much time as you need to be sure of your decision before you sign the adoption papers.  After signing, the decision is final and permanent.
